The Ultimate List of Guest Room Essentials

I always try to put myself in my guest’s shoes and see what they might need while they’re staying with me. I’ve been known to forget shampoo or face-wash if I’m staying with someone so it’s wonderful if these items are readily available for guests.  If you’re having anyone stay at your house this holiday season, then I bet you’re wondering what extras you need to lay out for them. Here is a list I’ve come up with to make sure you’re the best host!

Our Guestroom-Ready for guests!
  • Bathroom Essentials

    • This first one is technically for the bathroom but you’ll want to make sure the guest bath is stocked with several rolls of TP, a plunger (let’s be honest, no one is going to want to ask you for it), hand towels, bath towels, hand soap, extra toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, body wash and a bar of soap (It’s fine if this is all travel sized too. I like to keep all my travel sized stuff from hotels and we have a designated bathroom drawer for it. If multiple people are coming to stay with you and using the same guest bath, then you may need to purchase full sized toiletries. I also like to have a loofah and a few bath bombs on hand just in case they want to take a bath. If you’re like us and the guest bath is the same one you use for your kids, then make sure to clear out all the bath toys before your guests arrive. Make sure the bathroom is equipped with a hair dryer as well. Having some lotion and some gentle face cleanser in case they forgot theirs is also a nice touch and make sure cotton swabs are easy to find too… and maybe have some room spray that is easy to find.

  • Extra Bedding

    • Have an extra blanket or two in the guestroom. Just in case your guest gets chilly. I love to keep an extra soft throw blanket that is placed on the foot of the bed.

  • Wi-Fi Info

    • Leave the Wi-Fi password where they can find it. Maybe a little note on the nightstand. You could also write down any other info they might need like the front door code if your door is like ours and doesn’t use a key.

  • Reading Material

    • Have some books or magazines to flip though. I have several magazine subscriptions and Evan has tons of books in the guest room so our guest have plenty to read.

  • Closet Space

    • Have space in the closet for them to hang the things as well as an iron, a small travel sized ironing board, and a can of starch.

  • Snacks

    • Keep a basket of crackers, cookies or other goodies in case your guest wants a snack. I also have a small glass pitcher that our guests can fill with water before bed and then it also has a glass with it so they aren’t having to bump around the kitchen at night or trip over our dogs trying to find the kitchen.

  • Extra Fan

    • Keep a small fan for your guest to use if they need noise or they get warm. I usually just have this out in plain sight, so they don’t have to hunt for it.

  • Clean, clean clean!

    • Make the room inviting and make sure it’s clean. Dust everything. Wash the sheets, light a candle.

  • Remove your own items that you regularly need

    • If the room doubles as something else-our guest room is also my husband’s home office, make sure you get all your stuff you’ll need out if it before your guest arrives and don’t plan on entering the room until your guest leaves.
